Small fern fronds up to 60cm long, delicate, spreading and lacy. Very hardy. Suits rockeries with good drainage and hanging baskets if watered regularly.

Asplenium flabellifolium

necklace fern

Small fern with pale green fronds forming large spreading patches. Suits hanging baskets if watered regularly. Quite hardy but needs protection from slugs and snails.

Blechnum fluviatile

ray waterfern

Small fern forming a low rosette, 20-75cm. Fronds are prostrate or spreading, pale green and thin-textured. Fast growing in a moist shady position. Frog habitat.

Blechnum minus

Fern forms rosettes or clumps. Shiny green fronds, usually 40-75cm long. Forms dense patches, bushy to ground level. Needs good light. Frog habitat.

Blechnum parrisiae (syn. Doodia australis)

common raspfern

Terrestrial fern with underground stolons. Erect fronds, stiff and rough, 20-70cm long. New fronds attractive purplish/pink. Hardy and readily grown in any partially protected situation in the garden.

Blechnum pennamarina

alpine waterfern

Fern with prostrate dark green fronds and red new growth forming a groundcover. Hardy and adaptable, tolerating dryness but responding to regular watering. Grows during summer months and becomes dormant in winter.

Calochlaena dubia

rainbow fern

Vigorously spreading terrestrial fern with yellow green foliage to 1m. Very hardy. Prefers moist, shady conditions.

Hypolepis muelleri

harsh groundfern

Coarse fern, rootstock with reddish-brown hairs; dark green fronds 50-130cm long. Prefers moist, shady situation but will tolerate sun if well-watered.

Microsorum pustulatum (syn. M diversifolium)

kangaroo fern

Male fronds upright, strap-like; female fronds shaped like a kangaroo's paw. Fronds variable in size (5-50cm). Very hardy. Grows over rocks or logs in rainforest situations. Salt tolerant in coastal areas. Suits hanging baskets if watered regularly.

Polystichum proliferum

Very hardy. Forms a short trunk with age; fronds 30-150cm long. Suitable for growing in large container. Excellent for planting under established trees.
