GROWERS SCHEME

Tasmania's native flora faces threats from land use, climate change and a lack of awareness about the importance of our understorey. The Growers Scheme enables you to propagate Tasmanian native plants from native seed.

Who can join?

USN members can join the Growers Scheme (Link to Membership Page).

What’s involved?

There is an additional fee payable in order to participate in the Growers Scheme. This helps us cover costs of providing you with a kit to grow Tasmanian native plants. This kit includes native potting mix, forestry tubes, storage crates, seeds and an instruction book. The plants growers cultivate can enhance biodiversity in their own gardens or be contributed to planting projects of their choice.

The program suits everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned gardeners. The program includes demonstrations and feedback from the USN’s experienced propagation volunteers.

When can I start?

In September, registration for the Growers Scheme is invited on our social media pages and current USN members are notified. To ensure you receive registration notification, apply now to become a USN member.

Introductory Growers Scheme workshops take place at the USN nursery at the start of the growing season in October when kits are collected from the nursery. These workshops provide detailed guidance on what to expect and how to ensure successful propagation.

Growers sow seeds in late October. It is essential to dedicate time to watering and caring for the seedlings over the next six months while they develop.

By March of the following year, plants will have grown and are ready for planting.

You don't need much space or elaborate infrastructure to take part. Join us to help secure the diversity of Tasmania's native flora for the future. For more information, please contact USN at understorey@landcaretas.org.au
